986 Boxster S unknown leak from a strange hose

Dear members,

 

I just bought a Boxster S (2000) which I absolutely love and enjoy driving. However, yesterday when I got to work I noticed a strange leak. I immediately checked if it's oil and it didn't appear to be the case: I've checked whether it was engine oil or anything of the sorts and it doesn't appear to be the case. The liquid feels watery to the touch, with a hint of oil. I thought this may be coolant, but it doesn't seem to be the case either, no loss of coolant or a warning of such. Under the car, I've noticed the leak was dripping (there was substantial drip) from a specific point. A mystery hose which I'm quite unsure its purpose. I'm not sure whether this is a hose which is meant to be exposed and remove AC condensation or something that is now loose.

 

I'm going to the mechanic on Tuesday (it's a long weekend here in Canada so I can't do it sooner.) But in the meantime, I took a video. Would any of you fine folks be able to take a look and help me figure this out before I make the trip on Tuesday? I'd sincerely appreciate your help!

Looks like one of the drain pipes. If you do a search, there's a diagram showing their locations - two under the bonnet, either side of the battery and two towards the rear of the car where the soft top meets the body.

 

Pushing a trombone cleaner (not in everyone's toolbox!) or a stiffish piece of electrical cable carefully down the drain hole where the leak is should establish whether or not it is the drain pipe.

 

As it's the rear right, it might also be an idea to put a small cup under the leak to collect sufficient drips to check if it is indeed coolant.

David, can you tell me what it turned out to be?? Having the identical issue on my car, I woke up to a very large puddle under the center of the car. I rolled the car back to find a clear puddle that at first appears to be water, then when you put your finger in it it has a “slicky “ feel to it. Thanks

Might be the overflow for coolant expansion. I believe I had some coolant exit from there when I didn't fully burp my coolant.(air in the lines)V

I had a similar issue last week. I had a few drops near the rear wheels. Over the next few days, the drops got bigger. I filled the coolant tank all the way while the car was cold. The next day I go to my garage and I was swimming in coolant. Water pump. Odd because there was still plenty of fluid in the tank and the car never overheated. I went with an OEM pump and changed the belt as well. $500. I know the pumps are much cheaper on pelican parts but I didn’t want to take a chance. Now if someone can tell me why I don’t see the outside temp on/in my gauges anywhere, that would be great. The sensor is there. Driver side in the grill. It just doesn’t display anything for me. Little help? It’s a 2002 986. Thanks all!

Probably because the car does not have the OBC option...........
