My 02 Cab has 10K miles on it....always ran M1-0W-40, run in the cool North East. Local Porsche dealer in Naples only carries Castrol Syntex and recommends 5W-40 because of the higher ambient year round air temp.

Do I change or stay with M1 0W-40?

Don,

I use 0W-40 year round in California. Temps range from upper 20's in winter to 110 in the summer. I don't think the 5W is going to add much. If I were to run anything different in the summer I would run 15W-50. JMHO :D

I agree with Loren. I run 15w50 in the summer and for track duty and 0w40 for winter in the great white northeast. It sounds like that dealer wants to sell you some Castrol.

Believe it or not there is an oil message board. http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi It has an incredible amount of information for oilheads. I like their VOA and UOA reports - virgin/used oil anaylsis. These guys will send a sample of unused oil into a lab for testing. :o

What I found interesting is Mobil One 0W-40 does not get great reviews. I also like how the trash K&N filters.

Ask them what they think. You will get intelligent responses backed up with data. Oil does not behave the way us lay people think.

Don, I have always used Mobil-1, so when I went for my first oil change, and the dealer (in Florida) wanted to use Castrol, I told them I wanted to use my own oil. They said fine, and gave me a $60 credit. The oil (two 5qt jugs from walmart) cost me $40. Cake and eat it too!

Since then, I've decided (and have) changed my own oil. Easier than any car I've ever owned. There is simply no reason to pay $200 to the dealer for an oil change. Just use a Porsche filter for waranty purposes (at least that is what I do).
