97 TT with 25000 miles began to smoke occassionally upon start up. Sometimes it last a minute or two and other times heavy smoke for 5 to 10 miles and then subsides.There have been times it would not smoke for months and then out of the blue it starts the same all over again. Two Porsche dealers have not offered a solution. Andial modified turbo oil return lines have not solved the problem. An oil filter, check valve has been referred to as a possible cause, but even after Porsche filters were insalled several times the problem eventually starts up again.

Any ideas or potential sollutions would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone done a compression test?

No, none of the dealers or Andial even suggested doing a compression test.

The car seems to perform as always, but I'll consider it.

I had exactly the same problem on my 97TT. replacement oil lines and even rebuilt turbos wont fix.

dealers all dumb as stones.

final fix was to add the turbo oil line check valves to the turbo oil inlets.

apparently, porsche did this to the 997 turbo.

contact turbo kraft in so cal

purchase their retrofit kit

mine hasnt smoked a bit since i installed it.

make sure to clean out all the air lines: intercooler etc before you restart after installation or the accumulated oil will continue smoking

good luck

a few more details may be helpful

first, you can probably find the equivalent "kit" from other suppliers; i noticed an ad in one of the porsche mags from turbo kraft for the check valve retrofit kit and went with them but if you look for ads you can probably find others

apparently the issue is the residual pressure in the turbo oil lines at shutdown starts a siphon thru the turbo bearings resulting in the oil in the intake side of the turbo which then obviously gets blown thru the entire intake system, resulting in the burnoff during the next startup. no one knows why it starts but apparently porsche added the checkvalves to the 996 which turbo kraft modified to fit the 993.

not a trivial home job but doable.

mine hasnt smoked a bit since i installed it and now my local mechanic installs his version of this kit on his customer cars with the same success.

make sure to thoroughly clean the intake system after installation to remove the residual oil.

I have 1996 TT and had the same problem.... Tony Callis Racing in Califoria has a kit with all new lines and check valves that worked GREAT !!!

NO SMOKE... He raced these cars back in 1996 and saw the problem. Back then he fixed the problem with his kit.
