Oil Filter change question

In the excellent Oil and Filter instructions, in the diy section, there is mention of a small O-ring to change. I have spoken with two owners who change their own oil and they did not mention this part. Anyone know whether it essential to change this part? or is it just belt and braces.

The "O" ring comes with the filter in the box - it seals around the top of the plastic filter cannister you have to remove to take off the filter - you don't have to replace it, but since it comes with the filter anyway, it's good insurance.

You'll also need the new aluminum sump plug gasket - this is a part that will have to be purchased.

Tanks for your reply Geza. However I was talking about the small O-ring, not the big one that comes with the replacement filter.

Loren's pic above puzzles me. I don't have anything in the middle of the oil filter. I have a oil filter housing that is just a cup and has a big o ring around the edge. That pic doesn't look like my 996 filter housing at all.
That is because this thread is about GT3 -- not a Carrera. ;)

Did the oil change this morning, didn't have the small O-ring so reused the old one. Will change it next time.

The most important thing to have is the oil filter wrench, the chain type general purpose ones are no good. Get either the factory tool or an equivalent. In the UK there is a part branded 'Laser' which is available thru Halfords. The part description is Oil Filter Wrench 76mm 3/8"D Cup Type with 14 flutes, cost £4.99. You need a 3/8" socket set wrench to turn it. If you only have a 1/2" socket set, get a 1/2" to 3/8" adaptor as well.

Mike, I change my own oil and I DO replace the small O-ring. It's an expensive part compared to everything else, but I change it anyway. My dealer tells me that it's not really necessary to change, but I do it.

Yes, the small o-ring is a bit pricey. I took a new one to my local hardware store and bought some same- sized duplicates in neoprene. Now I have a supply.
