i have a 1999 996 c2 coupe that has started making a clicking noise in first gear at low rpm, (1000-2000) when lightly applying the throttle. it stops when you push in the clutch, and is only apperent in first gear.

my mechanic and a second opinion both suggested to continue driving until it fails as pulling it apart now may not be worth the time as parts are not always readily available. in most cases the entire transmission requires replacement. anyone experience the same thing?

1. do they make new transmissions for sale?

2. if they do is it worth it to get a new one?

3. do they sell gear boxes separately?

4. how available are the parts? :renntech:

just replaced my tranny 2 weeks ago. i have a '99 cab. i broke mine after launching poorly and slamming into gear, the synchros grinded so bad i thought someone was running a chainsaw against my engine. i had to use two hands to move the shifter out of third. car ran ok for a couple of months (ie. some lunging, and hard shifts) but then it started popping out of 3rd and 6th gear. i took it in and had a new tranny and clutch installed. cost me 9,000 grand all together. car shifts a lot better now.

constant clicking? i have a noise in 1st and second when appliying or sharply coming off accelerator but it is one click each way and only when car is movig at a speed of idle rpm. if you have the same then you have a few years to go (been in my car for the last three years)

yeah it sounds like the same thing, its not constant, but if i let the clutch out and the rpms are just above idol i hear it. also when i apply the accelerator lightly up to about 2000 rpms. after this it is either drowned out by the sport exhaust or it stops. i don't hear it in second gear. thanks for the post.

:D
