I'm looking at replacing the factory speakers in my 2000 996 cab with the HIFI option.. So far in researching it appears that the Focals are pretty good speakers. for sizes it appears that the 100kp's for the dash , and 5ws for the doors. which ones for the rear speakers? Is it the 100kp's?

Also, is anyone familiar with www.woofersetc.com ? they have the 100kp's here: woofers etc 100kps but I am not sure if I need all of that or just this 100kps .

thanks for the help and does anyone know of any better places to find the speakers?

thanks

100kp's work fine for the dash. but you will have to run new wires as the 100 kp's are component speakers with crossovers and the factory wires use a resistor and only one set of wires. I spliced into the wires at the output of the amplifier, and ran these to the crossovers, then new wires to the dash locations. You will need to use the frames from the old speakers as mounts for the 4.25 mids, some dremel work is also neccesary. The tweeters can be siliconed in.

For the doors, the 5WS are good, again, some dremel work to make them fit, you can use the stock wiring.

For the rears, 100kp's will work, but running new wires to these locations is a pain. You may want to consider some coaxials which can use the factory wiring.

Do a search here and on Rennlist, there are lost of posts with great pictures and instruction. By the way, I bought my 100kp's from Woofersetc.com but I later found this place http://shop.store.yahoo.com/vipmobileonline/17.html

and they seem to have better pricing. I haven't bought from them though. Rod from audioinovation.com can also set you up with the speakers already mounted, wiring harness, etc. with instructions.

Some say you need a more powerful amp, and I am going to be installing one, but I can tell you that the speakers alone may an incredible difference.

My suggestion: If you are intent on using Focal's -> talk to Rod Birch at http://www.caraudioinnovations.com/.

My reasoning: If you want true 4-component system (high, midrange, midbass, bass), you won't be able to achieve this cost effectively with the 2 component + 5WS + woofer system (also I understand that the 5WS's aren't being made anymore). This is true for 2 reasons:

1) Even if you can't notice the difference between true midbass speakers (which would come in the 3-component setup) and the 5WS acting as midbass (if you buy the 2-way and add the 5WS) this option is more expensive, since the 2-way set costs $219.99 (cheapest polyglass set) and each 5Ws costs $200+ (if you can find them) This will set you back over $600 bucks. With the higher quality 2-way set, your pushing $700.

2) You can't use the 3 component Focal set (165V) which is what you REALLY NEED for great sound -> because it has a 6.5" midbass which won't fit in your door (easily) - it will "fit" with a LOT of work, and still might not sit properly, or might rattle. DOH! You really need the 5.25 midbass (I think it comes in the 2-way set.) (BTW, the 3-way is $599 on woofersetc.com).

So what do you do?

Call Rod Birch. Rod sells a hybrid 3-component Focal set which is specific to Porsches. It has the same 4" and tweeter in the 165V, but he substitutes a 5.25" midbass (with Focal's approval of course). NOW you can have a true 3-way system that will fit in your car using Focal speakers. (I suggest also getting a set of coaxial fill speakers for the back -> $200) When you add your woofers, you'll get the best 4 way sound.

Rod will even do you one better: if you ship him your grills, he'll install them into your grills (at very reasonably prices) and ship them back to you.

Check out his site, and do some Rennlist searches for him. His group is widely respected for Porsche stereo upgrades.

This may all be worthless info if you don't wanna add a woofer setup. I f you're not going to add subs, you're in the right ball park using the 2-ways and the 5WS's (again, if you can find them).

-td <- my $.02 a few times over
