What is this sound at 3K RPM in first gear?

Right when I pass 3K RPM's in first gear I hear a slight rasp or very very rapid ticking or scratchy noise. It is hard for me to describe.. I think it might happen on 2nd gear as well, but its hard to say becuase the wind noise. I have my windows down to hear it, with the windows up, I do not hear it.

I think the noise is more noticeable when the car is either cold and even afer it is just warmed up... the nose is not as noticeable after the car is fully, fully warmed up. Any ideas what this could be? I hope its nothing bad!

There is a bit of a laggy feel when variocam plus switches over at about that RPM. I don't recall any noises though.

If you slowly bring the car up through 3000 RPM with the car in neutral - do you hear the same thing?

I do hear the same think in neutral... you have to listen really carefully & be in a tunnelish area where the sound will bounce back at you from the engine.

I have an 02 C4S and have noticed a slight bump or miss at precisely 3K when slightly acceleratiing. I only notice it during easy acceleration and not all the time. I don't hear any sound just a slight bump. On power acceleration I don't feel it. I just assumed it was some kind of emmission change up ( theres a a lot of **** happening back there ).

I get a weird loud barky sound on falling RPM whenever the electric air pump is running on when cold , I have heard this on other 996's and a 997C2S so I think this is an emmission friendly high lift valve thing.
