Code Help on 99 Boxster

Recommended Posts

My 99 Boxster will not stay at an idle. Car runs good but when I take my foot the gas it just dies.

I bought the Durametric software and the codes read as follows.

P0117 Engine Coolant Temp (Malfuction)

P0506 Factory Fault Code 32 - Idle air control - engine speed too low

P0102 Factory Fault Code 115 - Mass air flow sensor (Below Lower Limits)

Can anyone tell me what to do? Should I replace the Mass air flow sensor?

While car was running the live read for the Hot Film MAF was reading 1.35 to 1.37

RPM when it will idle is 760 to 800 But it will only idle when the car first starts, if I give it gas and then let off it will not idle again goes up and down a cpuple of times then just dies.

Both faults relate to the amount of air the engine is seeing (or thinks it sees). I would start by removing the MAF and cleaning it with electronic contact cleaner. While doing so inspect the connections to the MAF and make sure they are not damaged.

It likely would not hurt to clean the idle control valve too. Use carb cleaner on that and the throttle body/butterfly.

  • 2 weeks later...

Loren :

I had the same pb than bordert and followed your instructions by removing the MAF and cleaning it with electronic contact cleaner.

The engine is now quite and seems have finished to 'die' on idle

Pb is that I went to a PZ because I have no Durametric or other tool to read out errors codes, and the PZ tells me that the 115 error code already here is, and that I will have to replace the MAF with a new one ( 400 euros ) !!!

I don't think so, but the guy told me that this could damage the lambda probe, do you think it's possible ?

If I replace the MAF by myself, do you think that the DME will detect this by himself and correct his values, or should I erase the error code and "reprogram" the DME ( could a Durametric or other tool be useful for this, or are we in any way obliged to go to a PZ ?

Where is situated the idle control valve ?

Many thanks for your help Loren

Um, you said that that the problem symptoms were fixed...? The code will not clear itself unless the code is cleared manually using an OBD-II tool. You need to get the code cleared, drive a while (up to a few weeks), then check the codes again to make sure the code hasn't come back.

Thanks

Shash

What model year is car?

What (exactly) are your codes?

Some - but not all codes will reset themselves in time. Different codes have a different number of drive cycles and time without faults to reset. Most troubleshooting is done as Shash suggested - fix suspected problem -- clear the code -- see if the code returns. If you have a tool like the Durametric software then you can check the car for pending codes (codes the if not corrected will cause a fault and/or turn on the CEL).
