I am wondering whether anyone here with Tiptronic has experienced some gear whining noises when moving the gear lever from D to R or R to D? Thanks. :help:

Year car? Model/body type?

Is it true that once we move the gear lever (tip) to D or R, a hydraulic pump will be activated to pump fluid to the torque converter? If there is a whine from selecting gears (from N to D or R) then could this be a problem with the hydraulic pump? or a clogged oil filter or a stuck valve? Do you think that the changing of the transmission oil/filter will sort this prob. out?

I would have them check the fluid level and see if the shop can duplicate it.

I did take the car to OPC. They heard the noise too. They said fluid level is fine, no leak and it is normal for tip to have this whine noise when shifting gears with the gear lever. I have my doubts though.

Loren, any suggestion? The whine is from the engine area (only happen when the engine is hot and when engaging the gear from P to D/R or N to D/R). It will only whine once (not continuous) when engaging the gear lever. Do you think the changing of the transmission fluid will cure that noise. Thanks in advance.

I doubt it. I would ask them to show let me drive another 997 Tip that makes the noise. If other cars don't do it - then (IMHO) it is time to take it to your Porsche Regional Rep.

Loren, thanks for the tips. Actually the problem may not be the transmission because the noise comes from the engine area. The reason I said transmission is because that whine sound (or vibration sound) only occurs "once" everytime when I engage the gear lever from P to D/R or N to D/R. No sound at all if the gear lever is moved from D/R to P or D/R to N. After the gear is fully engaged, no noise at all and the transmission is solid like a rock.

I am just wondering, for automatic transmission, what components will be activated when moving the gear lever from P or N to D/R? Thanks.
