I want to install my V1 using the power I know is at the dome light area rather than running a line down to the center console area... I have done an extensive search on the web viewing various DIY installs and none of them show how to locate the 12v switched power or ground at the dome light..

I have viewed the DIY on this site but it is for a 997 and the wiring harness in this location is completely different on my 99 996....

If anyone knows the wire color at the dome light harness that is the 12v switched power and which wire color is ground it would be extremely helpful... I should be able to figure it out from there...

Have you had any luck finding this? I want to do the same thing on my 99 996. I'm guessing the sunroof motor harness might have the right wires, but I want to see a schematic before I start cutting wires.

I have just successfully completed my install of a hardwired V1 radar detector. Don't use the dome light wires, because they have power at the wrong times. What you want to use is the power wire for the sun roof. This way it goes on when the car is running and off when you leave the car.

Use the wire colored green and brown with a black stripe for power. Use the brown wire on the dome light assembly for ground.

The instructions for the 997 install are misleading. Be careful when you connect to the power cord that comes with the V1. The color coding is reversed depending on which end of the wire you use. Read "Making your own Power Cord" section of the V1 owners manual (on page 17 of my version). It says "NOTE: The sequence of wires must be reversed from one end to the other." If you face the plug with the contacts toward you and the cord on the bottom, the one just left of center is ground and the one just right of center is power. These are always green and red, but not necessarily in that order.

An alternative, if you are fitting a remote display, is to run down to the fusebox. I used the heated seats fuse to splice into, as it is live only when the ignition is turned on.
