I've purchased a cluster from an '02 996 and installed it in my 03 Boxster S. I've disconnected the extra 2 gauges - voltmeter and oil, but am still getting an error message on the OBC screen - "indicator failure" - which also displays an oil spout diagram with the error message. I believe relates to the oil sensors.

Can someone help with a wiring diagram for the 996 cluster so I can disconnect the pin going in that sends the error message.

Also, now the radio won't play with the new cluster> I get a "Porsche Protect" message on the radio? Any suggestions?

Other than that, it all pretty well works fine. Thx

I have always wondered if you could do this swap.

Your radio is looking for the code in the cluster, which it cannot find since you replaced the cluster.

The speedo, tach and the rest seem to be working ok. So can I put the code into the cluster so the radio will work? If so, then how?

And does anyone have a wiring diagram for the 996 cluster so I can remove the offending pin?

Thx

2003 was the first year for MOST and I always wondered if you could use a pre MOST cluster. A user radio code was eliminated when MOST came out.

I always thought the cluster would work, but I wondered how you would get the radio to work.

I think the codes in the radio and cluster are based on the VIN. I would see if you can erase the 996 VIN in the cluster and put in your VIN. Or, erase your VIN in the radio and put in the 996 VIN.

I'm guessing, because I do not know anyone who has back dated a cluster.

Thx. I 'll try that and see if it works. I'll let everyone know.

Ruff used to change the instrument panel on the 3400S to the 996 panel. If you call them they may be able to provide some tips.

Thx ToolPants and everyone else.

It worked. I had a local small P shop transfer all the vehicle info from the boxster cluster to the 996 cluster using his PST2 and now all is good. Local P dealer didn't want to touch it. Said it wouldn't work.

Radio works again and I have the improved OBC display (my opinion) visible.

Eureka!

Did you do the cruise retrofit as well? It would be interesting to know if the wiring was the same as it would normally be for a 2003 Boxster (ie only connected to the cluster).
