Hello,

New to the Porsche world, and appreciating all the insight I get from this great forum. So now my turn to ask a (stupid?) question:

I have a 986 2001 with 50000 miles, I bought second hand with 10000 miles.

Dealership tells me I need to:

a ) flush brake circuit. NP: I will do myself, got instructions in this forum on how to

b ) change pads. NP: will do myself, got instructions in this forum on how to

AND

C) CHANGE THE ROTORS. :help:

I thought unless you really asked a lot from them (circuits, etc), or bent them or scratch them, rotors had a very long life. So I do not understand why I am asked to change them. Are my assumptions correct? or are rotors supposed to be changed every 50.000 miles or sthg like that????

Thanks a lot for any guidance you can provide

Some reasons to change the rotors:

1. they are worn below the acceptable limit (thickness)

2. they have too long cracks emanating from the holes (if you have an S)

3. they are warped and cannot be turned

FYI, it is not too difficult to change the rotors on these cars. If you have 50,000 miles on the original rotors, you may need new ones.

Being that you like to DIY measure the rotors with a mic and see if they are within spec. Don't have a mic? They are not expensive and it is a tool that is indespensable if you work on mechanical things. If they are still good you can take them to an auto parts store for resurfacing. This gives them a flat new type surface so your pads will wear in evenly and quickly.

I bought a used 98. I noticed that my old rotors were "valleyed" from the edge of the rim. I immediately changed mine out. I got the cross drilled Zimmerman Cadium coated (anti rust). THe brakes are outstanding. As far as cost, I think I paid about $400? (with pads).

Is that for the S or non S or are they all the same? Thanks for this bit of info. I've been looking around for this for sometime :)

Boxster rotor minimum thickness limits (after any machining)

Front: 22 mm

Rear: 18 mm

Boxster S rotor minimum thickness limits (after any machining)

Front: 26 mm

Rear: 22 mm

My front are at 26mm and for a moment, you got me all happy thinking I've still got 4mm to go. That is until your post on the 26mm for the S :(

Time for new discs I guess...
