General part number description request

Hi, I've got a cable that has what looks like a part number attached on a yellow sleeve. The cable possibly goes between the Porsche PIWIS Tester and something else. Does anyone have a description of what this item is and what it's used for?

I expect that it's an old type of diagnostic cable but that's just a guess.

8 way (only 6 pins connected), screw on type plug the other

It is an adapter for the PIWIS.

So, why do you have it?

I'm working with with PIWIS, one of our team attended a Porsche training program and the cable was included in the bundle. The training didn't cover adaptors. Could you tell me what this cable and that other one in your photo is used for please? are there any others?

I take it the other cable you have is for an old tool? and both cables attach to the same round connector on a vehicle?

Is the round connector for an old diagnostic port? if so, up to what year and which vehicles does it cover?

The adapter in the top of my picture is for a PST2. The bottom adapter in my picture (which you have) is for a PIWIS.

This is before my time, so don't quote me.

Before the standard OBDII plug came into existence, the older Porsches had a different diagnostic plug. The cable in the picture below is used on a 993 before 1996. The other end of that cable went into the Bosch Hammer. When the Bosch Hammer was discontinued then there was the PST2 to replace it, and now that the PST2 is discontinued there is the PIWIS to replace the PST2.

In order to used the older Hammer cable with the PST2 you need the adapter in the top of my picture. When the PIWIS came out an adapter was needed for the PIWIS as the PST2 adapter will not work with a PIWIS. I see only this one adapter in the tool catalog for the PIWIS.

I guess Bosch/Porsche did not want to make a cable for the older cars that would work directly with the PST2/PIWIS, so they came up with adapters to use the older cable with the newer testers.

So, when do you let us borrow the PIWIS....

Do you know the part number, name and where i can purchase this older cable or cables that will allow me to connect PIWIS through the adaptor cable to the older types of diagnostic ports?

Hi, for anyone who's interested. The lead that goes between the PIWIS tool, its adapter lead and an old vehicle without the newer OBDII diagnostic port has this part number:

000 721 928 81 and connects to the 928 944 993 and possibly 964.
