Anyone have any idea what it might be?

It's 3" X 3" X 1" and has an FCC disclamer on it. "This device complies with part 15 of the FCC rules...."

I opened it and it has a largish Lithium battery pack. It can't be OEM with the attachment being velcro and the wires to it have black tape on them although this car had a poorly installed aftermarket stereo at one point.

I disconnected it with no apperant ill effects to the car. My guess is a phone option added after purchase? There are some dates on the circuit board that show 1999 same as the model yr of the car.

If noone knows what it might be, I'll post some pictures of it.

It is probably LoJack, I removed a transmitter, antenna, battery pack and switch from my center console also after I bought my car. I didn't know it was in there and was hardwiring my V1 when I found it.

Does it look like this?

So....

Where do you guys park your 996s????

Funny you should ask. I bought this car to replace a modified '05 Subaru STi I had stolen out of my driveway. They drug it up onto a flatbed. It was found 48hrs later stripped. Subie pics

Now the garage has been fully cleaned out (experimental airplane parts put away) and the 911 goes in the garage.

Besides, it would have only taken 15secs to pull out the CD holder and rip this little box out. I know, that's how long it took me.
