whats this cable for?

when i replaced my brake light bulbs on the left hand side, i noticed a cable that runs from the engine lid latch to a small slot where the entire rear light assebly is fitted. it is not the release cable conected to the release lever. but it does open the engine lid. does anybody knows what its for? i thought it was an alternative way to open the engine lid, but u have to remove (and open the lid in the first place to access it).

ur responses to my curiousity will be appreciated.

That cable is the emergency release pull cable. There should be a little hole in the bottom of the cavity where the tail light goes, stick the end of the cable in there so that it can be grabbed from under the car.

do i have to remove anything to access it in the event that i have to, like the fender liner? thanks
