I am building up my enthusiasm for the OBC retrofit for my 199 996 Tip. Does of you who have done it, any special precautions or needs for the Tip?

There are multiple threads with partial instructions, looks like I can assemble all the steps needed. The connector is still kind of a mistery, does it exists or is it made up with VW and BMW parts? And where does it connect once purchased or built is not clear. I got a part list from the PCA tech site, will gather all of that and attack it in a few weeks.

Any advise very welcome. Thanks

Try this for starters: http://www.brackenrig.net/OBC_Hack.htm

I think Tool Pants has a DVD showing how to do the install: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?a...code=_9x6_Werks

Given all the frustration I had installing Litronic headlights and the Porsche short shifter using printed instruction, I would probably buy the DVD to watch someone do it first instead of relying on several sets of printed instructions from the internet.

You have to make up the wiring harness using the VW wires and BMW connector. It takes less time to do than read about it. I handed my dealer the instructions I printed out, the new stalk for the OBC and the wiring harness I made up and they installed it

The local group has done about 60 retrofits over the years. But never on a tip now that I think about it. The only thing different on a tip is that there will be an additional connector behind the air bag for the shift buttons, if you do the retrofit with the stalk.

I started using the BMW connector years ago when Porsche jacked up the price on the Porsche connector. I bought a bunch of them from BMW so I do not even know what Porsche is using these days. It does not matter which connector you use. I switched to BMW only because of the price.

This is the BMW connector with the VW wires.

I did this on my 2001 911 with tip. Nothing special about the tip other than removing and re-connecting the tip wires on the steering wheel. I used the Porsche connector and VW wires. The key to success is labeling the tips of the wires that have to be connected to the car, and soldering the VW wires rather than crimping them. Also, buy some friction tape to wrap around your VW wires, as shown in Tool Pants' photo. Good luck.

Here's my parts list:

Porsche parts:

999.650.056.40 (connector)

999.650.057.40 (cover)

993.552.573.01.01C (gasket for steering column)

996.613.219.00EAK (strg column stalk with OBC control)

VW parts for OBC:

000.979.009 (wire, quantity, 3)

000.979.010 (wire, quantity, 2)

That is perfect, Thank you all! I will make sure to take copious pictures and throw it in the DIY page.

I've done it on my 98 Tip, and my brother's 99 C4 Tip - no problem.

If we order the connector from Porsche in the UK it comes in a BMW bag! Be careful, because the stalk plug can easily go into the connector the wrong way round.
