New Owner Question

I just purchased a 2000 Boxster and when I shut the engine off and remove the key, the radio stays on, and the dash instrument lights stay on, and the chime goes off like the lights are on (but they are off). Is this normal? Shouldn't the radio cut off and the dash lights and chime stop when the car is shut off?

Doesn't sound quite right. I also have a 2000 and the radio and lights will stay on after removing the key, but only for a few seconds. Are you exiting the vehicle at the same time or staying put with door closed? I have only had my Guards Red 2000 for 7 months. There are several features that I have never encountered with other vehicles. A thorough reading of the owners manual is a must. Good luck

Thanks for the response. The weird thing is, when I unlock the car and get in, it starts chiming again. I think there must be a short somewhere. . .

I have the same problem in my 98, its the ignition switch. Look it up on here and you'll find the part number (its an audi part you can get for like $40) and the complete walkthrough with pics is on here too.

I agree!! I think I might be able to take the ignition switch out and WD40 it to get the spring to click back into place. But I'll look for this document with instructions you mention!

Okay, I'm an idiot. I'm terrible at searches . . . I can't seem to find the directions on how to replace this thing.

I just thought of something. If I buy a new ignition thingy, will my key still work? What part am I replacing exactly? Will WD40 squirted in there do anything? The Porsche Service Dept. says that it is the spring that clicks closed when I remove the key that is not working.

Thoughts?

Goodness sakes! I got a replacement ignition switch in the mail today, and went in the car to try and remove the old switch. G** D***!! THat was really hard to get out. Turns out, it wasn't the right fix. After I put the new switch in, the car was doing the same thing. THe car still 'dings' when the key is not in. So, I took it to the Porsche Dealer . . . I don't mind paying the $300 to have the whole thing replaced as long as I don't have to go under there again. I've also asked them to do a 27 point inspection on the car. I've only had it 5 days, and I want to know what else is waiting for me to be fixed.

So, my question is, should I return the car to the dealer? They gave me 2 weeks to make sure I'm happy, and I have 8 more days on that promise to get my 2001 Mercedes SLK back.

I'll keep you posed on what Porsche has to say on Monday after they give it the 27-Point inspection. I'm thinking that anything over $3000 and I"m gonna take it back.

I'd be very surprised if you need to spend $3000! I'd stick with the Boxster though - those SLK's aren't anything compared to a Boxster ;)

If there are some major issues, take it back, and then buy another Boxster some where else. I take it you didn't buy the car from an OPC (Official Porsche Centre - i.e. Porsche main dealer)? If you did get it from an OPC, then have them fix the issues or threaten to return the car!
