996 engine flat spot & sticking clutch

I'm new to 911 ownership and love the car. I have two areas on which I'd appreciate your comments:

1) Engine flat spot

If I’m on a gentle throttle with perhaps 2500 rpm and floor the accelerator the engine appears to have a flat spot before it gets going. My local Porsche dealer says that all 911’s are like this and it’s caused when the induction manifold changes length (at least that’s what I think he said). I wouldn’t expect a £60k (when new) car to have such a noticeable built in default. Is the dealer telling the truth?

2) Odd feel to the clutch and brake peddle

Every now and again, if I come off the clutch and break peddles at the same time, the last 2cm of travel seems to judder both peddles, almost as though they’re being caught on something. I can’t see anything getting in the way such as loose carpet. Any ideas?

1. Likely just Variocan Plus. To make it is I suggest getting your dealer to let you drive another MY02 or newer 911. There was a DME update for some of the early MY02 cars that reduced the effect somewhat so I think it is important to see if yours is "common" or different.

2. Check the lubrication of the common clutch and brake axle shaft (item 13). The bushings need to be lubricated too (6X and 14X). Porsche suggests Optimal, Optitemp LG2 grease -- Part No.: 000.043.203.37.

Regarding the 'flat spot', the torque curve of the 3.6 engine has a noticeable dip between 2000 and 2700 rpm. If you floor the throttle at low revs (under 2000) the car will initially accelerate well, you will then feel the acceleration tail-off noticeably between 2000 and 2700 and then the torque comes back in again as you approach 3000 rpm. You will then feel a 'bump' at approx 3300 when the variocam plus switches to the higher-lift cams on the inlet camshaft. This behaviour is entirely normal.
