99 996 C2 I have noticed after 30 mph I am getting a whine or hum from the transmission. It is louder out of the passenger side of the car. When the trans warms up the sound disapates a little but is still noticable. I have recently replaced the trans oil and had no real change with the noise. I am wondering if the wheel bearings, axles or cv joints need attention. I am at 71K and have had all required services done at P dealer to date throught 60K service.

Anyone with a similar experience? any help is appreciated.

Sorry 6 speed Trans

Tom

Thanks for the info, maybe I am just paranoid. I have a MY70 911T and it has the same noise but with that old of a car I would expect some gear noise.

I have had none of the other gear issue I have read in the previous posts of it popping out of 1st or any other gear.

I would hope to head off any problems before they get to a replace issue.

Tom, Does the noise decrease after say 40mph. My 99 996 had a noise that was very noticeable between 25 to 35 mph. Sounded like a gear or bearing noise. The dealers told me it was normal but it turned out to be the rear wheels out of alignment. The inside of the rears had cupped, I am still running those tyres but after the alignment the noise has been reduced by about 70%. New tyres coming up soon.

That is very good information. I know the alignment is out a little, I had GT3 sways put on recently but don't know if this would contribute to alignment. The stearing wheel is off center but no distinct pull left or right. I unfortunately bumped a curb right side where the noise is louder. I will have to get 4 wheel alignment and see. The noise almost sounds like a rub type hum. It does get softer as speed increases. Thanks for the info!
