A professional window tint installer will have all the info you need on the proper legal tints in your state. Some states such as mine will allow you to tint as dark as you want with a letter from a doctor stating you have a physical condition that causes you problems with the sun. I carry such letter with my car at all times in case the cops want to enquire about the legality of the tint on my windows. I picked a tint the wasn't too dark because of safety reasons.

Wardhog is right about local regulations. They check the add-on tints here in NC every year with vehicle inspection and charge you extra for it. Dark windows make the cops nervous if (when?) they pull you over.

Just remember that the darker you get the windows tinted the darker it will be at night - so pedestrians, bicycles and other vehicles will be harder to see.

And remember if you tint your windows and do get stopped, roll them down and turn on your dome light so the officer can see inside when he approaches. In many locations this is a legal requirement as well as a good idea.
