Does anyone know if the part No 99642498300 is the short shift for 996

I installed the Porsche short shifter 997 424 983 00 in my 986 (which I think has the same exact shift housing as your 996) and it fit/worked just fine. It is not the same as the Porsche rebranded B&M short shifter. I have also seen reference to Porsche part number 000 044 700 26 on the Porsche web site as a short shifter, but don't know what the difference is.

996 424 983 00 is the Porsche clone/B&M short shift already mounted in the black plastic shift housing. It is for 996/986. Looks like this.

What is interesting is a note that the stock of this unit is to be used up, and then it is replaced by the 997/987 short shift 997 424 983 00. This is what Geoff put in his 986. See, Geoff, you were ahead of your time.

Is the amount of throw the same on both the 996 B&M clone and the 997/986 replacement ?

I have not measured the throws to compare, but....

The B&M/Porsche clone has a shorter shift then the Porsche 997/987 short shift based on what I can feel. That is why Geoff put the 997/987 Porsche unit in his 2001 986. He wanted a short shift, but not as short as the B&M type.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

One of my concerns about fitting the B&M short shifter was that the change may be too extreme and hard work before the gearbox warms up. So the 997 part inc. tower may be the right solution for me, especially as I have the option to return to standard.

My next job then is to get some prices.

Although Porsche claims approximately 20% shift reduction, I measured 25% on my 2001 5 speed Boxster. At first it felt really short, now it feels just slightly shorter than the original, has the same basic smooth feel as before, and I can use one finger to shift.

It definitely feels easier to shift than when I first installed it. I attribute this probably to plastic on plastic wear between the shifter and housing. Before I installed it (i.e., out of car), the shifter would stay in whatever position I placed it (due to friction), whereas the one I took out would always flop off to one side.

I wish I could claim originality here, but I found a guy in Alabama on Rennlist that used the 997 shifter on his 996 - see http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/show...38&postcount=19 (he emailed me saying it should work on my Boxster) and the side-by-side pictures from http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/show...19&postcount=17 made me realize the housings were probably the same.

Note that dealers will all tell you the new short shifter won't fit in the older 9x6 cars

It's also interesting that Porsche now says to use the new shifter once the old stock is used up. Maybe they figured this out by reading these forums :D
