Y'know..I told my dealer about this oil pump piston thing and they said that the 2100 RPM noise I was hearing was NOT related to that. Instead, they told me it was something to do with the air injection pump and that all boxsters seem to make that noise, that 986's did it too.

I don't think they know what they're talking about.

They don't know what they are talking about...... give them the Technical Service Bulliten number and then tell them to fix your car ASAP.

I obtained a copy of the TSBs dated Feb. 27, 2006, for the 2.7/3.2 987, and the Cayman (987). The TSBs are identical. Since I am in the US I have what was issued by Porsche Cars North America, Inc.

Porsche calls it a " Screeching Noise From The Engine During Warm-up" at about 2,000 rpm. The control piston in the oil pump cover is to be replaced with a new design, for engines made as of December 5, 2005.

The mechanics did not have this part out of the engine on a 987, so they took one out on a 986 for my sample pictures. Takes longer to get the car on the lift then it does to replace this "piston", which I would call a valve, which is at the end of the spring in my second pic.

I live in Canada, and my dealer does'nt know about TSB ENU1726.Is there a different TSB name for Canadian cars. This noise is really annoying.

Where could I find a copy of TSB ENU1726 ?

I had mine replaced in Jun 06 with the then revised part. It started to chirp/rattle again recently - i took mine for service last week, and they replaced the piston again. The service advisor suggested there was a revised piston released 6 months ago, but i couldn't get any more details. I've barely driven the car since, but the nosie has gone again, although i think there are similar chirping noised under acceleration when cold now (needs a few more starts etc to confirm this tho.)

I had my boxster finally fixed by this TSB.

The 3 dealers in Quebec province only lazy know about the (campaign) technical bulletins which numbers always begin with the letter ( W ).

So, I had to force him to make a search in TSB list by tittle ( screeching noise from engine during warm-up at about 2200 rpm ) and they found it. They had to order the modified piston which arrived in 2 days.

P.S The tsb state a lost of 0.25-0.5 liters while removing the piston. But in my case, the lost was 3 liters and it stopped draining only when the new piston was inserted. Anyway, everything has been charged on warranty.

Thanks to all - had this fixed on my 2006 Boxster S last week; no complaints from the dealer here in Melbourne, Australia. The service guy said they new all about the problem and fixed it for anybody that bothered to complain.

I was paranoid for a day, thinking they had just made the noise quieter and had shifted it to 3000 RPM, but a quick search tells me this is actually the change over point for the twin cams. Apparently I can avoid this noise by never driving under 3000 RPM :D
