New to the board and just bought a CPO 2004 C4S and notice the pressure to be at 5 bar while RPM @ 2-4k. Manual says 3.5 bar @ 5K. is there a pressure/engine problem? :(

Normal operation of oil gauge:

Cold startup = 5 bar at all rpms

Fully warmed engine at idle = about 2 bar

Fully warmed engine above 3000 rpm = 4 - 5 bar

Nevr, ever below 1 .5 bar no matter how hot it is.

My owner's manual says: "With a warmed-up engine and at a speed of 5000 rpm, the engine oil pressure should be approx. 3.5 bar."

I thought this was rather odd when I first read it.

Like you, I usually see higher pressures than 3.5 bar at higher RPM's. This is entirely consistent with most other cars I have owned, until I wore out the motor anyway. I think what they meant to say that if you don't have at least 3.5 bar at 5,000 rpm, then you have a problem.

I should say that I am not a mechanic and and am only speaking from my experience.

My '98 996 C2 coupe is running at 1.5 bar at idle when fully warm. I have only had it a few months and I am sure that it was slightly higher when I first got it (the oil level has only dropped slightly from full to slightly below full).

Should I check anything? or is it only concerning if it now drops below the 1.5?

I am not positive, but when it is very hot outside and the car is hot I believe I have seen the needle at 1...

I am not positive, but when it is very hot outside and the car is hot I believe I have seen the needle at 1...

If you're running WATER (I mean 0W40), you can easily see 1 bar when the oil temp gets above 230F. Get rid of that weight oil if you are using it and move up to the proper weight oil in the hotter months. (15W50).

It is not what you would call the 'hotter months' here in the UK (it was snowing lightly today), but I see 1.5 bar at idle when engine is warm independant of the weather. However it does sound as if I should not worry too much about 1.5 bar. Thanks.

I was reponding to rcg412 who lives in NY and experiences 1 bar in hot weather. Definately too low. 1.5 bar as a low is fine.

my car also when it is warm sits just above 1 bar while idle. Now i am wondering if it was serviced with the wrong weight of oil before I bought it. I have only had it a month and it was given an oil change in november (before I owned it.)

Is it worth taking it in to get a fresh oil change?

capt601 - if its >1 i wouldn't worry about it... if its 1, or less than 1 might be worth taking it to the dealer.

I just had the 60K service done on my '99 996 right after I purchased it (at 64K) just in case it had not already been preformed. I don't know what weight oil the dealer used but I'll be it is too thin for our upcoming summer.

Anyway I noticed sitting at a light and after being in slow traffic for 15min that it was idleing at about 1.5bar. (OAT was 62deg) The temp was showing about 190deg.

It will be interesting to see what happens when OAT is 120deg.

BTW capt601 the price of an oil change is inexpensive for the peace of mind you'll have knowing your oil is fresh.
