Hello new friends~!!

I am a Boxster S owner in South Korea and I love the car.

I believe the RMS problem is quite common with 986s and 996s.

My car is 2003 986S with tiptronic transmission and it has run 32000 miles on clock.

I had a porsche mechanic to have a look at it when changing the plugs

but he told me that there is a minor leak and it is quite common with all porsches ( lol )

and it's nothing to worry about, because the leak is minor.

I have checked it again when I had my tires changed this afternoon

and there seems to be a definite leak.

I kept checking the floor of my garage for a while but it does not seem to drip

on the floor.

What should I do? I intend to own this beauty for a long time.

But the warranty has expired and I am quite worried about the cost of repairing.

I did a search on couple of websites but most people say that even RMS is

replaced the leak will start again at some point, then what would be the point of

replacing it? Would it be okay to leave it for a while? or is it something more serious

that I have to get it fixed immediately?

Thanks,

You might want to check the PCA site for Scott Slauson's various tech articles on this. I had three before my engine was replaced under warranty. Needless to say, I did a ton of research. Almost everything I have read suggests that the leak is generally a nuisance more than a real problem and can be addressed the next time yu have the tranny out. (i.e. clutch repair)

The issue arises if the leak develops into something more major which could, in theory foul the clutch. At that point you have no choice but to do the repair.

The bigger issue is how to eliminate the problem. Real answer, nobody knows. Slauson suggests replacing the seal with the cayenne seal. A british mag suggests another (much more expensive) solution.

For now, I am content to monitor and repair as needed.

Aquido, if the leak isn't even spotting the garage floor, it is very, very minor. Don't worry about it. Check your oil level regularly to be safe. The danger is if the leak becomes major and you run low on oil. Not likely to happen suddenly or without you noticing it.

The RMS on my 01 Tip S has been leaking for at least one year. I have not yet had to add oil between oil changes.

Enjoy your car, and to be sure you do, drive it like you stole it!

Thank you~ ^^

I will just wait until my next oil change then..

Keep monitoring the leak. Are you sure it's RMS and not coming from the side? I'd fix it if you start seeing a small puddle under the car. Until then, don't worry about it.

BTW, warranty is Asia sucks. It's only 2 years right? Warranty is the biggest reason to buy new. I think a 4-5 yr warranty should be standard.

Thank you,

My leak comes from centre of the car..

And warranty here is 2 years and only recently they offer 2 extra years of warranty option.

That option does not affect the cars sold before and there is no company where offers

extended warranty...I believe this is same in Japan as well.
