I'm not sure if I'm imagining this, but lately I feel if I have been accelerating hard then lift-off fairly quickly I feel the whole car is slightly moving to the side....could this be anything to do with the differential or am I just paranoid?

Tha car has about 40,000 miles - I'll maybe get the ball joints and wishbone bushes checked.

When I bought my car I noticed the same thing. I have been told (rightly or wrongly) that this is a characteristic of the way the car is weighted under acceleration vrs deceleration. The power moves much the weight of the car to the rear so when you decelerate the weight moves forwards again. You will probably notice it mostly in a sweeping corner situation. Hence they say that you should never "lift" in a corner as it destabilises the car quite considerably. I recently did some driver training and they were very insistent that the car brake in a straight line and always have power in a corner to keep the traction on the back wheels. (thats why they are so wide!)

Another thing to check is tyre pressure in the front.
