Disable PSE Cutout - cut the diode or the wire?

Recommended Posts

After much reading of this forum, there seems to be 2 different views about how to disable the cutout on the PSE - I'm about to have PSE fitted to my '02 C4S. The section in How To tells me to just cut the diode. However, some other comments suggest that doing this will occasionally require the relay to be pulled out to get the switch to work again (since apparently it gets stuck in "quiet" mode) and cutting the pink/grey wire is the better way to go. Is there a definitive agreement on which is the better option?

I recommend removing the Speedometer A signal wire (pink/grey) from pin 6 of the relay connector. It is easier and cleaner to remove it from the speedometer signal jumper plug bundle (slot 23 on the relay support bracket) instead of the back of the relay connector. You can also just snip the wire, but make sure you have the right pink/grey wire, as several devices (like the cab top electronics) use the Speedometer signal A signal to control things. Cut the wrong wire, and something may not work anymore.

The reason that I recommend the wire instead of the diode is because what you want to do is to disable the 27-45 mph automatic "quiet mode", but still have full functionality of the manual switching into "quiet" mode. By removing the speed signal from the relay, for all intents, the relay thinks that the car is always stationary, so it will not trigger the automatic mode.

Damaging the relay by cutting the diode will certainly work, but that also introduces the uncertainly of the relay sticking in the quiet mode.

Yes, just remove the relay completely. It should make your PSE "OPEN" all the time. This is what I did. If you want your car to be silent, just put it on again.

I understand that pulling the relay will make it "On" all the time, but I need to be able to turn it off as well. I live in a built up area and don't want to scare my neighbours in the morning. That's why I'm going for the PSE

I really don't think a PSE is any noisier than a stock car under 3500 RPM. I doubt you drive through your neighborhood at 4000 plus RPM.

Why should he pay for the full install and then remove the relay? This doesn't make any sense at all. I#d remove the wire because I favor mods that are easily reversable.
