Tyre Noise

I have 225/40/18 on my front wheels and recently at low speeds with half to full lock the tyres are making a scuffing noise on the road like they don't fit properly anymore. The tyres have loads of tread left although have done 26,000 miles. They look evenly worn but the noise sounds like they are coming off the rims. Ideas?

Second mini problem is that my cigarette lighter isn't working. There is power there but when I push it in, it doesn't lock in place and doesn't get hot. Anyone know if parts are available separately (ie the plug in bit from the dash bit).

If you look inside the lighter, you can bend the connections back and it will work fine. This happened to me as well.

Loren thanks for this. Do you have any thoughts on the tyre problem. The dealer just replaced front lower arms, track rod/tie rods, top mounts and antiroll bar bushes - do you think they have messed the set up?

I would certainly go back and ask them to check the tightness and alignment of the work they did. New suspension components are know to loose and should be re-torqued after the first couple of thousand miles. But this sounds much worse than that so it could be a mis-alignment or one side might have come loose.

I changed my lighter socket at the weekend as I had the same problem. It was about £6.00 for the whole thing - socket and element. It was a bit fiddly to change, but why muck about bending the tabs for such a small amount? They are obviously bent to a certain dimension, and how would you know if you got it wrong? Probably when it doesn't eject, and something gets a bit too hot.

Trust me on this...it is so easy to reset those tabs...you will not short the system or blow a fuse...and it is way easier than changing out the socket which is a royal PITA. Oh yeah the cost is nothing!

Sunset Porsche suggested I buy the cigarette lighter socket for the '02 996 that is slightly deeper and eliminates the problem. I thought the old plug would just pull out but no such luck. Can anyone tell me the secret? Thanks!

Fantastic. I was able to remove the exhisting cigarette lighter socket only to find that the new one (from an '02) is slightly smaller in diameter—so it doesn't fit snug back in the existing clear plastic retainer anymore. So do you think I need to order a new clear retainer or will that have problems fitting in the console cover?

Clearly this was designed to slip together easily during assembly but not to be changed...

I ordered the new plastic lighted collar (that allso came with a new light fixture) and everything snapped back into place perfectly. If anyone changes from an '99-01 996 to an '02 996 cigarette ligher socket, you'll need the order the cigarette lighter socket P/N 996-652-101-10-A05 and lighted collar P/N 996-652-102-10. sc
