preventive replacement of RMS

Recommended Posts

I have my car in the shop getting a new clutch and PSE. My mechanic reccomended that while he had the motor and transmission out it was a good idea to go ahead and change the RMS. Also reccomended that i change the Plugs since the car has 41,000 miles on it and this has not been done. Can anyone tell me if this is a good idea?

I went in to check on progress today and got to check out the clutch situation from under the lift. The mechanic was very helpful and showed me where a little oil from the RMS had dripped into the clutch housing. Wasn't a lot but a nasty little glob. Good idea to have him replace the thing anyway if your that far in. The Transmission was out and he showed me all parts and every thing else under the car looks great.

I had one issue that he pointed out. The right rear tire was wearing a bit heavy on the inside of the tire. He reccomended taking it to the dealership and have them check and alighn the right rear. Anybody know what this will cost and should i go ahead and get the whole car aligned? The mechanic said the Front end looked good and tire wear was even on all the other three wheels.

He has the exhaust system all in and expects to have the button and the vacumm line run and installed intime for me to pick it up tomorrow. I am fired up to hear the pipes on the new exhaust. Will let you know how things turn out.

Look at the RMS writeups that talk about revised bolts for that area (names of which are escaping me) and have them replaed while you are there. It might add a little to the cost but it certainly willl save you from any more heartache or expense.

As to the alignment, definitely get all four done at once. It'll probably cost the same to try and do 'one' corner because the setup is going to be the same. I've seen people post between 100 and 360 to get their 996 done ( wonder which one of them went to the dealer ). Wherever you go, make sure that they have had their equipment calibrated fairly recently.
