I have a 2000 Boxster S. While on a 1 hour freeway trip I noticed the top opening light coming on at freeway speeds. When I arrived at my destination, the top would not go up. The next morning (thankfully it did not rain) I was able to put the top up normally. I drove about 20 miles and after breakfast, the top would not go down.

I got back home and took the car to the dealer. They could not duplicate the problem and did not want to change any of the relays or switches without knowing what the problem was. The car came home. Several days later I got in the car, lowered the top and went for a ride. When I got to my destination, the top would not go up. Several days later the top went up. When I tried several minutes later, the top would not go down. I noticed over the next several days that if I operated the top before I started the engine, it would work. After I started the engine, it would not operate again.

I read numerous posts on this web site, and used the Micro Switch Trouble Shooting Guide posted by Ron Bonner. After numerous readings that were the way they should be, I concluded that it was the Control Relay. I purchased the relay today (PN 986.618.199.00) for $$82.50, went home, plugged it in and the top now works fine. By the way, my old relay had no black dot on the back, the new one does.

Thanks to everyone who posted info on top problems, it helped me solve my problem.
