I am thinking of putting my V1 readout in the drink holder. I'm talking about the drinkholder that is at the very top of the center stack....just above the heater controls....The one that comes out on the right side and then slides out further to expose two cupholders.

This is for a car with PCM, I dont know if I've ever done it on a car with a CDR23. Pull off the horse shoe looking trim peice that goes around the center of the dash. After that you have to pull out the center ac vent. There are two clips inside the vents on the top that hold it in. Pull down on the clips and pull out the ac vent. Then remove the 4 t-20 screws and pull out the PCM assembly. There are two metal clips holding in the cupholder, push those down and remove the cupholder towards the front of the car.

Removing cup holder

1. Removing cover and central vent for the dashboard

2. Press metal clip 1 arrow and hold. Pull the cup holder 2 out of the retaining bracket 3.

Honesty, if you have the tools in hand itll take under a minute. But seeing as you've never done it before itll probably take a bit longer. The picture loren posted shows the piece you're left with after you remove the 4 screws.

Actually, I'm thinking of cutting out the middle of the cupholder and cutting down the V1 Display...then mount the display in the hole in the middle of the cupholder. Just an idea at this point, though.

Actually, I'm thinking of cutting out the middle of the cupholder and cutting down the V1 Display...then mount the display in the hole in the middle of the cupholder. Just an idea at this point, though.

I saw a pic some time ago where the person replaced the cd holder with an extra storage tray (very easy) and then cut a face plate for the open tray with a cutout for the remote V1 display. It looked very professional. It looked like a factory installation.

Does anyone have a play by play. I keep reading horseshoe, and I can't find the darn horseshoe. All I want to do is to replace the entire cup holder assembly (both cup holders) and glue them forever (just kidding, but it is tempting). Thanks guys.

I have some specific notes to add to the discussion on removing/replacing the center dashboard cupholder in a Porsche 996.  (Mine is a 2002 911 Cab.)

1.  Remove the horseshoe trim piece.  The “horseshoe” (center cover trim piece) is held in place by 4 plastic tabs, 2 on each side.  I used a plastic putty knife to gently pry underneath the horseshoe  to remove it.  Be gentle to ensure you don’t break the plastic tabs.  The plug-in electronics attached to the horseshoe do not need to be disconnected.

2.  Loosen the plastic frame that holds the center dashboard components in place.  The frame is held in place by four T- 20 screws.  Remove the screws to loosen up the frame from its mount to the dash.  It does not need to be totally removed, just loosened.

3.  Remove the two center AC vents.  The vents are part of a single assembly.  The assembly is held in place by two metal clips between the  top of the vents and the dash.  The metal clips are deep in this slot and difficult to see.  The clips rise upward toward the passenger section, so they need to be depressed to remove the vents.  Both need to be depressed at the same time.  I used two butter knives to depress the clips, but a couple of 1”wide  putty knives would also work.  Once the clips are pressed down, slide the vents toward you.

4.  Remove the cupholder cartridge.  On either side of the top of the cartridge are two metal clips.  The clips rise upward toward the front of the car.  Depress both clips, and slide the cupholder forward toward the front of the car (away from yourself)  to remove it.

5.  Reverse the process to reassemble the dashboard components.
