I used Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W-40 on my 02 Carrera. The oil was changed last March 2009 at 55K miles and now my car has 60K miles. I often checked the oil level and both the dashboard indicator and dip stick always show full since the last oil change. Should I change oil now (5K mile interval) or should I wait until 10K miles? BTW, my car has new engine at 47K miles.

What do you guys advise?

From the Porsche Maintenance Schedule:

· On vehicles with annual mileages of less than 9,000 miles (15,000 km), an annual maintenance must be carried out once a year.

· Maintenance with oil filter change must be carried out at least every 2 years according to the mileage, if the mileage for a major maintenance has not already been reached.

· For an annual mileage of more than 9,000 miles (15,000 km) it is recommended to carry out the next maintenance as soon as possible.

I will perform an annual maintenance and delay oil change to the next 5000 mile (65K miles). I just checked the oil and it still show full with honey color, not brown or black.

By the way, I did not see fuel filter change required in the maintenance schedules. Should I do it at 60K miles?

Your car is MY02?

If so, then you do not need to change the fuel filter (ever).

I just did my first oil change with filter on my new to me 31,000 mile 2001 Cab, I started putting in nine quarts, then bit by bit over two days added another whole quart, so now have ten quarts in there and the dip stick and the dash agree, its full, but not overfilled. Not sure if it's worth the terror of worrying and waiting for it to explode, but feeling some confidence at this point. All seems well. Gretel seems very happy. The only Mobil One fully synthetic I could buy at Walmart in grade 5w-40 has got Turbo Diesel Truck written all over it, which concerned me, but it has all the correct requirements.

one quick question!

i have an 03 carrera cab 6 spd with 65k on it. i live in los angeles, Ca. so the weather is hot most of the year. In the manual it recomends to use a 15w40/10w40 or 20 w50/15w40 or 20w40/ 15w50 if the temp is over 50f. so what should i use? so far ive only managed to find 10w40 and 15w50. what do you recommend. thank you

Approved oils (on Porsche's list) as of April 2007 include only -

Synthetic oils that are:

0W-40

5W-40

5W-50

The Porsche TSB supersedes any manuals statements.

Any of the listed oils will work fine.

I am also new to this forum. I live in Seattle Washington and I have a cabinet full of Mobil 1 10w30; ..... would this oil be too thick for my 2001 Porsche Carrera 996 for our average temperatures of 60 degrees in the summer and 45 degrees in the winter?

Another tip is to use a T50 Torx bit if you have one. It is a better fit than an 8 mm allen.

I just did my first oil change, and I agree that the Torx "feels" like it's a better fit than the Allen. However, I beleive that the Torx is more likely to strip the head than the Allen. I would not advise using anything but a 8mm Allen. On another note, I replaced my plug with the LNE one from Pelican, and I feel that this larger anodized plug with a magnet is a very good replacement for the stock plug. I have confidence that this plug is much more difficult to strip than the stock one.

going to do my first oil change on my 02 C4 Cab next week. I'm so glad to see this diy so much less intimidating now. I'm planning to install the LN Engineering Spin-on filter adapter. is anyone else using the LN Spin-on Filter adapter? If so, how has it performed for you/

I just bought a 2001 996C2 and dropped the oil and filter from the car. I noticed that the drain plug was missing the aluminum washer / seal and there appears to be no spindle / spring / check valve in the oil filter housing. I can see a metal tube in the base of the filter housing, and on the bottom of the engine where it screws in, I can see the corresponding mounting point, but there is nothing between them.

 

What should this spring check valve look like, and can they be ordered seperately from the housing?

 

(I already had the drain plug seal in my parts bin, so don't need to order one of those.)

There should not be anything between the engine case the bottom of the filter canister, which is where the bypass valve should be.  I am not sure if Porsche still sells the bypass assembly separate from the canister housing anymore, but a good parts department should be able to answer that.

I just bought a new canister and I can see that the bypass valve is at the bottom of the canister, the "metal tube" you're referring to. It's about half an inch raised at the bottom that mates to the filter.

Mine is just an empty 1/2" bit of tube protruding from the center of the bottom of the housing, looks like it should have something to sit in it.

 

I called the local dealer and they told me the bypass valve is part of the housing. Does this pic below look like I have the valve or just a cup for it to sit in?

My understanding is the spring is INSIDE that 1/2" bit. However, I've never take one apart to verify. My expectation is I can pull that metal tube up (to open the valve) and feel the spring.

Yes, that's the bypass valve as I understand it. Can you try to grab the round tube in the middle and pull it up (if you plan to replace it anyway so risks of damage is not a concern)?
