I just ordered my GAHH top with the glass rear window for my 01' Boxster S. I was wondering if all boxsters have the harness for the rear defroster, or is there a kit that I need to buy to make the new glass defroster work?

Thanks

I've been through this already with Toolpants (who kindly provided the information). I think, if you have the electric heated mirrors it works off the same circuit, you just have to plug it in. Can you take off the inner panel and see if there is a wire going down from the socket at the back?

First find the socket for the hardtop demister plug. Under the seatbelt below it there is a panel covering the corner of the cockpit. This comes away if you take off a couple of screws. Remove these and gently pull away -- it will still be connected at the top of the panel. The wiring harness should be visible dropping down from behind the socket for the demister plug and running along the side of the car. (See the photo on the thread I posted.)

Frankly, I'm not sure you need to do this: if you have a USA car and have the electric mirrors and demist (which I think TP says is standard for US cars) you should have the harness fitted. Why not pop the hardtop on first and test it? (Bowl of hot water on rear shelf should mist up the mirror enough for a test.)

Is the socket for the demister behind the driver seat? I've never used a hardtop, and I just purchased the new soft top with the heated rear glass. Basically, I just want to know if I have to buy any extra wiring. Hopefully, the wires are already run since I do have the heated morrors.

Thanks

I am pointing to the plug for the defroster. All US cars have it because heated mirrors are standard in the US. It has power on all US cars.

I do not think GAHH includes the wires from their glass window to this plug. I think guys are buying the hardtop wiring harness or 2003/4 glass window soft top and using that.

Thanks

I wasn't sure if I needed to buy any wires or harnesses....I did some reading and I think the part 3 of what I'm looking for is 986 612 083 00.

Can anyone verify?

I'm pretty sure your part number is for the harness from the dash switch to the defroster plug, which your car already has. You need the harness from the plug to the window.

You might post in this thread because Wimster said to use the 2003/4 harness from the soft top. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...opic=4503&st=60 For some reason I cannot find that part number. I though people were using the hardtop harness because when this glass window top came out months ago one of the parts guy at my local dealer said they were ordering the hardtop harness. That part number I can find, 986 612 081 01.

When you get your top can you take a picture of each electrical connector at each end of the glass for the defroster. I have seen a GAHH top at my local dealer months when it was in for service. There was some type of connector at the ends of the glass but I do not remember what it was. But this car had no wires from the connectors so the owner did not hook them up.

This is the connector used on a 2003/4.

They are a manufacturer for the new soft top that has a heated glass window for pre 2003 boxsters. Just bought mine on ebay for under $700 US!

Attached are pictures of the 2 defroster connectors of my GAHH top (not installed on the car yet). GAHH says that that one connectot is for negative and the other for positive (order doesn't matter; either side can be used for positive or negative). Because I didn't know what to do with the connectors, I took the top to my local Porsche dealer. He quoted the same part number: 986 612 081 01 (part 25 on the schematic attached), which is used for the hard-top's defroster. The dealer didn't have any part in stock and so I couldn't verify if this wire will be compatible with the GAHH top.

From the schematic, it looks like the wire has one connector on the one end (for connecting to the socket behind the driver's seat), and most probably 2 (1 for negative and 1 for positive) for connecting the defroster on the other end.

Is there any user out there that already has this wire installed who can confirm this?

By the way, if anyone needs more pictures let me know.

Also, if anyone has any installation instructions for the top please let me know (the ones that GAHH sends aren't very helpfull).

Thanks for the part number Tool Pants.  I got a hardtop that was missing the harness and needed the part number.  This is a 10+ year old thread, gotta love the search feature.
