1999 Boxster - My CEL has been coming on and when I read the codes it's the often discussed, ever dreaded P1123 and P1125 codes. I pulled the MAF and cleaned it, reset the light and drove for about 40 miles before it came on again. I hooked up my DigiMoto and started looking at numbers that have been posted on this site. My MAF seems to read fine at about 5.9 g/sec at start-up and settling in at around 5.16 to 5.2 g/sec when warm.

My problem is the oxygen sensors. They fluctuate slightly but basically I get the following readings:

Bank 1 Sensor 1 = 0.84

Bank 1 Sensor 2 = 0.64

Bank 2 Sensor 1 = Massive fluctuations reading .04, .06, .125, .2, and .76

Bank 2 Sensor 2 = Readings from .195 to .3

What exactly is this indicative of? It seems to me that Bank 2 (whichever side that is) is the side with the problem but what is the likely diagnosis? Also which sensor is which under the car? When I look at the exhaust there is an upper sensor and a lower sensor on each side.

Any input would be greatly appreciated as I cannot pass the CA smog test with the CEL on and I hate to spend ghastly amounts of money at the dealer. Another note - the smog test station says that even when resetting the light or disconnecting the battery the CEL stays in memory and the smog testor will pick that up and fail the test. Does anyone know anything about that?

Thanks!

FYI - California residents - I had the CE light come on during a smog test and ther result was a failed test even though it passed all the emissions testing. I have read in many places on this site that the DME needs to run through cycles before it can be properly tested and resetting the light does not necessarily provide the proper "clearing" needed to pass emissions testing. The test station mentioned this as well - that disconnecting the battery or resetting the light with DigiMoto or whatever will still read a light fault during the smog test.

I took my car to the dealer who investigated and determined I had a small vaccuum leak somewhere in my EVO intake and that my MAF and O2 sensors were all ok. They cleared the DME and said I should monitor the light but no repairs were performed I went directly to the smog test station...where the car promptly passed inspection.

Hope this helps anyone with their CEL on before a smog test as it was bothering me when trying to pass that test.

By the way, my hat's off to The Auto Gallery in Woodland Hills, CA. They tested my car, checked for vaccuum leaks and reset the CEL and didn't charge me a dime. I would definitely refer any friends with Porsches to them for fair service. Ask for Don in service. They also handle Ferrari, Maserati, and Audi.
