1988 911. Car runs great! starts easy first start of the day. If I stop for gas or a quick stop it will not re start if it is warm? I let it sit for ~20 minutes starts no problem. I can drive it all day with no problems but if I shut it down I have to give it some time.

Any experience with this?

It would be best to find someone with a code reader and see what is going on. A bad temperature sensor could cause this (it thinks it is cold out so it gives the car too much gas) or it could be something else.

88 911 will not give codes. this sounds like the check valve in the fuel pump is weak, that is is the engine is not belching black smoke. the black smoke would be more the head temp sensor. you need to hook up a fuel pressure gauge to check to monitor it during cranking.

I just read through the owner's manual for the '87 911 and remember it saying to depress the accelerator for "warm" starts and the clutch for "cold" starts. It's not a high-tech answer, but it was in the manual.

Hope it helps.

My similar problem with an SC engine in a '76 911S was caused by a weak, tired, old 0.8hp Bosch starter. I solved it by cleaning all the battery and ground connections and replacing the starter with a rebuilt 1.5hp Bosch starter from eBay.

I had the same problem on two seperate cars that were both caused by old starters that would get heat soaked and quit cranking until the car cooled down.

Concur with starter. Also check the engine ground strap that its in good shape. Simple and easy DIY replacement. I had this exact proble on my 75 Super Beatle, 74 911 and 83 911SC. In each case it was the starter.

914s have a common problem with hot starts. Short fix was to bang on the solenoid. That worked for me the one time it happened. Or let it cool down.

Long term was to install relay.
