VIN decoder coder

I recently purchased a 1998 Boxster here in Spain that was brought from Germany a couple of years ago. Now, when a car is introduced into the country, the registration date is the only date used on the "title". I ran the VIN thru Scouser's VIN decoder and the manufacture year shows as 1997. I don't know if the car is a 1998 model made in 1997 or I got took on this. Is there a way I can find the MODEL YEAR?

In the middle of the VIN there should be the letter V or W. V is 1997 and W is 1998.

Another way is that model year 1998 was the first year for side air bags, at least on the US model.

I am also not sure of the year of manufacture and the year model. If you look inside the driver's door it states the full date of manufacture. Mine was manufactured on July 1997, decoder also shows "Vehicle Type Designation 98" also USA/Canada Body Type and engine so it could have not shown at a USA dealer earlier than September. Logistically it makes sense to be a 98 model unless Porsche engages in very bad marketing strategies (in the USA it is a common practice to start selling next year models as early as July-August).

Maybe somebody with more knowledge can enlighten us. :rolleyes:

I am fairly certain it is the manufature year. An example to prove this is my own 996. It is registered in the UK in March 2000 and this is first registration from new. On the UK registration documents it says the year of manufacture was 2000. But the VIN decoder says it is 1999. I tend to believe the VIN since it is highly likely the car was manufactured in 1999 and not the 1st qtr of 2000. SO in reality my car is a 1999 model (akbeit it has all the traits of a 2000 + 996). In fact I think I am right in saying that the 996 cab first came out in 2000 so it means my cab is seen to everyone as a 2000 model. But the VIN tells the true story ;)

The Vin No does not state time of manufacture, it states model year.

The model years normally run from August until July, so (9P6LA) would be a 2006 model year Cayenne and that vehicle would have been manufatured between Aug '05 and July '06

year of sale is the date sold, which should be the same date as listed on the Porsche internal system. The selling official Porsche dealer must always report this to the local importer who then passes that info to Porsche.
