Though I am looking for a 986, I stumbled on a 996 with 55K miles, generally pretty clean with a price in the mid-twenties. Problem is that it will not stay in 6th gear. Clutch was replaced...

I've never worked on a 996, and my closest mechanical experience would be swapping out transmissions on 4WD Vanagon Syncros, which I have done several times.

How nuts is it to consider buying a used transmission and doing the installation as my first 996 DIY project?

Thanks

Porsche will give you one tranny for $6000 + labor. I got mine done for $6800 through local mechanics. Just add that to your cost. It's an easy job.

You can find used tranny for less but no waranty and no guarantee of failing down the road.

Tom,

Are you thinking about getting a certain car from Virginia? ;) I just got a new tranny for my '00 996 for $5,900 plus the cost of installation (through InterSport in Tysons). There is a shortage of remanufactured trannies right now so you might have to get a new one.
