Is the MAF sensor on the Boxster the same as an '03 Carrera C2? If so I was wondering if I could borrow one of your MAF sensors Nader? I have a CE light that pops on and we think it's the MAF sensor, but before I go out and spend $$ I wanted to make sure.

Thanks

Your 3.6 uses 986 606 125 01, which is also the latest e-gas version used on the Boxster. Nader has a 1998 which is not e-gas so it will not work on your car.

If you go to the October 9th tech session you might find someone to swap. I sent an email notice to your atari address but it came back.

Hey Jeff

Yea, I'm no longer at Atari...You can use my personal email address...I think you have it already.

Yup, I'm going to try and make the tech session. Miss hanging out with you guys.

Nat is resetting my CE light later today.

ToolPants, if I have the same codes, any idea what else it could be besides the MAF?

Thanks,

Nader

I have the classic problems related to a failing MAF (99' 2.5L Boxster - MAF Part # 996 606 123 00). I want to replace the unit myself, but is it neccessary to recalibrate the MAF and ECU after a new one is installed?

(My dealer wants $375 for the unit and 1.5 hours labor, when I can buy it for $235 and install it myself in about 15 mins.) :soapbox: I cleaned it today and will see if this helps, but I'm pretty sure it needs to be replaced.

Only issue I have is whether I need to have the ECU recalibrated.......and if so, how much should I expect to pay the dealer for this?

Thanks mucho

I just found this article by googleing "how do I fix a mas sensor problem on a 996 911" and it litterally saved me $550.00. I spent a wopping 5 minutes taking the part out. 2 screws (dealer claims 1.5 hours labor "freakin crooks") and cleaning the part with electrical device cleaner you can pick up at stapples or office depot. Simply clean the part, reinstall, unplug battery for 10 minutes to reset, reconnect the battery cable and whala "no more CeL prob." if the part is truly damaged then by all means relplace and "do it yourself" I could teach my 9 year old son to do it. Try this method before you spend the $160-$345 for the part. Hope this helps you as much as it helped me.

that's great news, but... personally, i have found that cleaning the MAF is usually only a (very) temporary solution. my guess is that you will again have MAF issues in the near future.

best bet is to replace the MAF with a new one (if the MAF is actually the cause of your CEL - and it usually ISN'T - keep that in mind). AutoHausAZ.com has the best prices on MAFs these days.

you didn't mention any problems besides your CEL being on. what were the codes you found? if they were 1128/1130, more often than not, it is not the MAF.

as far as teaching your 9-year old how to do it, i did exactly that. ;)
