Replacing MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor)

Nader, you might want to get the bit at any local auto part shop such as Kragen, AutoZones.. even Walwart. They are less than $10. If you couldn't find them let me know :-).

I'll head over to Kragen and find it... thanks. UPS just dropped off the box as I'm writing this. I opened it and found only the filter, no sensor. I guess I now have to call The Parts Bin and find out if I'm getting the sensor. Will keep you posted...

I have a set of anti tamper bit from Frys Electronics because I use them on other things. If you want just the one and only bit you will ever use, they are sold by Orchard Supply Hardware.

Thanks TP, may go with that OSH idea. Since the new sensor didn't show up, I went ahead and cleaned my existing one with carb cleaner and installed the new filter... car is reset so we'll see if the CE light comes back.

Will keep you all posted on the new sensor.

Nader, if you could have a procedure for changing the rotor + pads on this board with pictures, that would be great. I'm thinking about doing that myself too. Or, if the procedure already posted somewhere on this board? Thanks.

The first time I changed the front brake pads I armed myself with tools and directions. When I changed the rear pads several months later, I pretty much dove right in without referencing directions.

I ordered the speed bleeders and am very happy with them.

Alright, finally an update on the MAF from "The Parts Bin" and their website, www.carpartsteam.com. I just got off the phone with the rep and I was about to get hostile. Apparently, the sensor has come in.... BUT, there is a "new part #". And, oh by the way, a new price of $284. Its the same sensor but with a new part number. As Tool Pants wrote in an earlier post, they are wizening up. Of course, I told the rep this is unacceptable since I had a receipt for $159 and its still on their site at $159. After waiting on hold for 12 minutes for the "supervisor", the rep came back on the phone and said they would honor the $159 price :). Its shipping today, ground, so I'll keep you posted as to how it works.

The cleaning did not work; late came back 2 days later.

Oh, one last thing... the new MAF part number from the Parts Bin is a Bosch: B3130-70627. The old part number at $159 was B3130-116456.

I'll keep you all posted on the replacement when it arrives...

I thought I read a post that said to clean it with carb cleaner... ooops! I did and apparently that is the wrong stuff to use. You need to use electronics cleaner.

Ok, new MAF arrived this afternoon and it is now installed. It is exactly the same as the stock one I pulled out :thumbup: The car sems to be running fine. The picture of both sensors is attached; new one on top...

So do I need to unplug the battery and reset the CEL, or shall I just drive and let it cycle through???

I believe unplug the battery will do the job. Don't forget your radio code. If you need to disable with the code reader let me know.

$159 for a 2.5 air flow sensor that my local dealer charges more than double. You should have bought 2 so there would be an extra for the next local 2.5 guy.

To remove the 2 anti-tamper Torx screws you need a T20 anti-tamper bit. This bit has a hole on the end. This is my set of bits.

Now the question is trying to find one! The Parts Bin doesn't have any of these numbers on their website. I even called Bosch, but the reps haven't gotten back to me for a while.

Any help would be great. If I can't find this part, how much should I expect to pay to get the DME reconfigured to work with the new sensor? I'd like to get this problem solved as soon as possible.

986 606 125 00 replaced that sensor in April 2000 then it uas updated again to 986 606 125 01. I don't know the Bosch number but someone should be able to cross reference it.

996 606 124 00 is the first version of the e-gas sensor, and was put in new e-gas cars until January 31, 2000. Then the "improved" second version 986 606 125 00 went into production, and that part number is now superseded by 986 606 125 01, which I will call the third version.

If you put in the second or third versions in a car that had the first version then the DME has to be reprogramed. Porsche no longer sells the second version as it has been replaced by the third version.

The second and third versions interchange without a reprogram, if the car came with either version.

The first version 996 606 124 00 is still being sold by Porsche. It is also used on a pre 2002 996 C4. Aftermarket must have it somewhere......

My guess is 2 hours if you go with a version other than what is on your car. Not that it takes that long if the sensor is your issue, but you know how it is.

I unplugged the battery, its been a few days and no CE light. I'll keep my fingers crossed... The car seems to be idling a bit lower and a little quieter.

TP, to answer your question about buying two for $159; they barely shipped my one censor for that price. They tried to raise the price on me while I already had a receipt.
