I have a year 2002 Boxster 2.7 tiptronic. The engine was damaged 2 weeks ago and i am looking for a engine to be swap on it. The question is that i was offered a Year 2002 2.7 manual engine from the breaker, I am wonder that can i just install the manual engine onto my existing tiptronic gearbox? Do i require a brand new torque convertor or can i use the existing torque convertor from the damage engine? Anyone have experience on this issue. Please help me out. Million thanks!

Hi,

My understanding is that there is a difference between the engines for a TipS and a Manual. Porsche slightly upped the HP for the TipS engines to accomodate Parasitic Loss from the Torque Converter. Of course, this may merely be a function of the DME Maps, that I don't know.

If the HP was upped you would think the sales literature would make note of that which it does not.

Also if you order a replacement engine out of the Porsche catalog (at least according to PET) they are the same part number. The only note is that the tiptronic does not come with a fly wheel and the manual does not come with the compressor.

The ECUs are different.

One of our local owners, Jean, had his engine replaced this year with a new engine by our local dealers.

Jean has a 2000 2.7 manual transmission. Porsche did not have at the time any new manual transmission engines in the US. So Atlanta shipped a tip engine to our dealer. Peter put it in. Peter said all he had to do was to change some of the wires for the engine harness.

Is it a easy job changing the wires for the engine harness? Can i used the existing engine harness from my damage tiptronic engine on the manual engine? Thanks

You will have to use your old harness. Usually you do not get the harness anyway with the new motor. What you probably want to do is to put the two motors side by side. Then transfer whatever you need from the old motor to the new one. At that time you can check to see that the old harness connects up to the new motor in the same way.

The only thing that I can think of that would be different is that the AT version uses or does not use some sensor that the manual does not or does use. So if you have the two motors side by side you should be able to tell if there are any differences.

Hi,

I know I read somewhere about Porsche adding 6-8 HP to the TipS cars over the Manual to compensate for Parasitic Loss due to the Torque Converter. I was especially struck by both how innovative and forward-thinking this was, and that no other car that I know of does this. Because of the small increase, I assumed it was accomplished by the DME.

It may take me a couple days to re-locate the source, but as soon as I do, I will post it here.

OK, thank you guys. I have found out that after 2002 june, the 2.7 engine power has increase from 220 BHP to 228 BHP. As for 3.2 engine, the power increase from 252 BHP to 260 BHP too.
