If you actually have a bad head gasket (which I cannot see in the photos), you would be the very first head gasket I have ever seen fail on one of these engines.

 

By far, the two biggest reasons for intermix on an M96/97 are cracked cylinder heads, or cracked cylinder liners:

Best engine? I dont know. A lot of people has a problem with boxer engine in low milage. My engine blow up last week. IMS was replaced. Somethig different damage engine. Opsss

My engine also blew up.  The more I learn about these engines, the more I realize how much of a crap shoot it is.  Some folks are lucky and some folks are not so lucky.  Going to do a LS swap.  Will probably outlast every single m96 engine on the planet.  I do not see these cars around in 30 years..

Before going down the LS path, you might want to talk to one or two of the forum members that have done the LS swap; general consensus is that they would never do it again.

Hi 

 

Some people are doing swaps from the VAG group, straight bolt ups. The Audi 1.8T into Boxsters seems to work well.
