I have been driving the car at around 4k rpm lately. Sometimes when stop at the stop sign and then hit the gas, there will be a cloud of white (slightly greyish) smoke come out from the exhaust. Something wrong with the engine?

It is really helpful if you list:

· Model year

· Body Style (i.e. C2 Coupe, C4 Cab, C4S Cab, etc.)

· Transmission type (i.e. 6 speed or Tiptronic)

· Interior color (when relevant)

· Country specific information (LHD, RHD, RoW, US, Canada)

or is this a TT?

Loren, sorry mate. It is a 996TT but I hope you can give me some hints as to whether I should be worry. Car is a 2002 tipronic. Could it be just too much fuel?

Fuel is usually black smoke.

First, I would look for any oil leaking at the bottom of the engine. Also check the coolant level as coolant in the oil will also give white-ish smoke.

Any oil consumption? How many miles?

Service took place about 5 months ago and coolant is slightly over min level. Oil consumption is on the high side (I think). Car is about 9000 miles (oil consumption about 850m/quart). If the car is driven at around 2-3k rpm, no smoke whatsoever. But driving it at around 4k rpm for 3-5 mins, then sometimes a patch of white smoke will appear after stopping at a stop sign and hit the gas. Is this normal?

Mine did something very similar, not a tt though so may not be applicable, cam cover bolts leak and dripple drops of oil onto the exhaust. This may be the problem, have someone sit behind you at a junction and check if the smoke is coming from the tail pipe or the surrounding area!

The oil seperator bellows fail as well and this leads to oil being drawn into the throttle body, same results!

Good luck.

The TT engine uses a true dry sump oil system so there is no oil seperator bellows.
