Does anyone have a Ruf RGT wing/decklid on their 996? If so, I need pics of what to do with the airbox. The fan is relocated to where the air intake used to be, and there is a square in the decklid right above the airbox. But I believe this is the clean side, so I can't just cut a hole in the airbox lid. Is there a new airbox to go with this decklid? Better yet, anyone got a pic of a RGT engine bay?

Right now I just have the snorkel that goes from the decklid to the airbox removed. Engine bay temps are usually close to ambient from what I recall reading, so I shouldn't be sucking in hot air, right?

Thanks in advance.

Hi

I just purchased an RUF RGT style deck lid I just purchased. It fits up to the 1999 style airbox and has provisions for the fan assy. If you have the later model wing the air intake vent is in the lower center portion of the decklid. The RGT wing is made to install on a GT-3 , the wing I have is the same exact size but made for a 996.

Ok, crap. That's the problem; I bought this from a guy who had an actual RGT. It was a 2001 I believe (not '02 or later as I also got his front bumper and it fits my '99 just fine). The air intake is right above the airbox, not beside the fan like on yours. Would a GT3 airbox fit a '99 996?

Yeah, I just looked at the engine bay pic of a GT3 on Ebay. That is the airbox my decklid is set up for, and there is no way it would work. It would fit ok, but there is no way I could plumb it up to my intake manifold. So now I either 1) call the guy and get my $$ back (he said it would work on all 996's), but I've already had it painted which sucks, or 2) order the right decklid (more $ plus it would also have to be painted), or 3) I make a custom airbox.

Option 3 seems the most appealing as I could easily build an aluminum box with a hose that goes in w/ a cone filter attached. I then could seal that against the top of the decklid. Or I could make a box with a flat filter and lid, and have a hole in the lid that matches the decklid hole. <sigh>...why can't things ever just go as planned! Arrggh.

I don't see any way, it's a different engine, intake, MAF, etc.

Loren is right, The problem would not be so much the airbox but the duct the MAF go's into might not mount up in the same place. GT-3 and Turbo 996 variants have the different engine case design. I would sell it and get the right part for your car, it will be much easier in the long run.

I see your point now, I think if you went to a non-porsche air duct that would allow you to run a like a K&N or a B&M filter and a cold air pipe that allowed you to mount the MAF it could be made to work. It is going to take some work on your end to figure out the right sizes & parts to buy. Tuners have been making stuff like this work for sometime now. The basic cold air duct is not a complicated piece of hardware, it consists of a tube, coupling, cone filter and two clamps. This way you could use your freshly painted RUF decklid. Now that I tink about it I would a least try to make a cold air duct for it before I gave up. You can give up now or take a chance and you just might make it work.

Ok, as luck would have it... I found my solution on Ebay. Anyone know who makes this? It will place the filter right under my decklid intake. It has shields on the side, but I could still build a box around it if necessary. BTW, I emailed the guy and bought it early. I told him I needed this and was in dire straights. :)
