2004 3.2 V6 - Sudden loud rattle, then disappeared. Timing chain problems?

Hi.

I own a 2004 3.2 V6 with 248,000 km (154,000 miles) on the odometer. One cold morning, after being parked outside (I live in Norway), the engine produced a strong rattling sound upon starting. The noise faded after a few minutes—gradually, if I remember correctly.

Today, I noticed the engine still makes a rattling sound, though not as loud as that morning. It’s clearly audible when the hood is open. I strongly suspect it’s related to the timing chain, but I find it odd that the noise started suddenly, was quite loud, and then mostly went away. There is no fault codes on the engine and it runs perfect.

Would it be worth replacing the upper tensioner first? Could a worn tensioner cause this kind of issue? It’s inexpensive and easy to replace, so I’m considering starting there.
