My first Porsche, and I'm loving it, however there is a tarnish as the gear selector is not returning to center.
Car is off the road now for winter and I would like to fix this.

I have looked at the selector mechanism and that looks fine. Gave it a clean and lubrication however that did not make much difference.
So then looked at the gear linkage attached to the gear box. The bushes there are rusty and look quite worn and are a bit stiff. The pivot point is also rusty and having popped off the part that attaches to the rod that goes into the gear box the whole mechanism still feels stiff.

This video below covers it well, though mine is not at stiff as the one seen in the video.

I am fairly convinced that the issue is the gear linkage shown in this video.
However, before I fork out for a replacement part can someone help me understand what part springs the gear selector back to center.
Is this something inside the gear box itself, the gear linkage or the selector mechanism.
Am I likely on the right track with the gear linkage seen in the video?

Using the issue is with the selectors on the (outside) of the gearbox. Sometimes they are damaged and sometimes corroded.

I would inspect and test before I would by new parts.

Thanks, that is where I am starting.
Stripped today. No damage that I can see but very dirty and what grease remains is very thick and contaminated. The pivot is freely moving.
Once I have finished cleaning up should I simply pack the bushes with grease (any specific grease?) and reassemble?

Out of curiosity, what does bring the selector back to centre, is that a spring etc. inside the gearbox itself?

No, it is in the shift lever in the center console.

Just been out and checked. There is no resistance at all in the shift leaver assembly now the gear linkage is detached.
Asked in a few other groups and the consensus is that the mechanism to pull the shifter back to center is inside the gearbox itself (which does match what I have found today).
Replacement washers on order, then will pack with bushes with lithium grease and reassemble hopefully next weekend. Will report back.

No after pictures however very happy after fixing my gear stick not returning to centre for £3.50.
Removed this this gear linkage, thoroughly cleaning the bushes, replacing the rotted washers, greasing and reassembling.
Replacement new part is around £700-£900 (though there is a part from a newer Porsche that looks the same but is not listed for the Boxster for around £200).
