I have 1998 Boxster with a coolant leak into the number 6 cylinder. I have done a compression test and leak-down test on all of the cylinders and the other cylinders don’t exhibit any issues. There is significant air blowing through the coolant reservoir on the number 6 cylinder leak-down test. There is a milky appearance in the oil. The coolant was drained and there is no oil appearance in the coolant. Upon researching into the possible causes for coolant leaking into the number 6 cylinder indicates that there could be cracked head gasket, a cracked cylinder head or a cracked cylinder. Are there any other areas that could be the problem? My question is what would be the mechanical cost to fix any one of the possible problems and where would be a location as to where a replacement part could be purchased?

Head gaskets don’t fail.

cracked cylinder head is not uncommon and can often be welded.  A decent cylinder head rebuilder can probably do this.

 

if the cylinder itself is cracked, then either new liners (and not just any body should be trusted) or a replacement case half is needed.   I’d seriously consider just a used engine and maybe take my chances vs the expense of new liners or the effort and (while your in there) costs.
