I have a 98 Boxster, I have been driving with great pleasure and this is my 6th Porsche. It has been 20.000 miles since the last pad change.

Recently I have several clutch issues and I showed it to the dealer but dont feel comfortable with what is being said. Dealer said pad and linkage requires change (estimated $4,000). I would like to ask your opinion.

3 weeks ago, I had hard time keeping the shift in the 1st gear, as soon as I try to accelerate it pops out and when I use Rear, it starts to shake.

2 weeks ago, no issues above, 1st and R is working great but hearing a sound in 2nd and 3rd (ad-hoc basis).

This week, I am back to situation where I was in 3 weeks ago.

Linkage sounds logical but pad exchange doesnt sound right since 2,3,4,5 seems like working good and I dont feel like it is slipping.

Thank you

I am in Palo Alto, who will be a good person to fix this?

Sounds reasonable. It sounds as though the clutch plate is either contaminated or warped (out of round). You only slip the clutch in 1st or reverse (unless you're a poor driver..) so thats why it doesn't judder very much in the higher gears.

Whatever the outcome, it sounds as if the clutch needs an inspection, and you may as well have new components fitted while the gearbox is removed.

Im not a expert on this but, on past experience on another car, my sycro's went bad, in this case your 1st - 2nd syncro might be bad. That cause my gears to pop out of gear when accelerating....

It could be the clutch disc or the pressure plate or synchros as mentioned above. Without looking closely, there's really no way to know for sure.

If it's the clutch, you can DIY for waaaayyyy less than the $4K. Parts are around $500 for clutch plate, pressure plate, release (throw out) bearing and pilot bearing. Shoot, you can even throw in a new flywheel for another $700 while you're at it if you want to. Then, if you do that, replace the RMS since it's a pop-off job once the flywheel is off.

So you get an entire new clutch, flywheel and RMS all in one for about $1200 plus 8-10 hours of your time. The bonus is you'll be real intimate with your Boxster after that.

I personally would not touch an RMS that is not leaking. All the other clutch parts are subject to wear but if a seal is dry I would not touch it.

Have you tried bleeding the clutch? If it doesn't disengage fully you might have problems shifting. Since different gears get different amounts of wear, I wouldn't be surprised if there was different behavior for different gears.

Also, if you installed a short shift kit, it may not be adjusted correctly. This would cause it to not put the transmission fully in gear no matter how hard you push the shifter.

It turn out to be transmission issue and Boxster transmissions are not repairable. I had to buy a new transmission from Porsche.

Not repairable? Is it a sealed tranny or something like that? I've just never heard of such a thing so I'm wondering what would make it unrepairable. That would be really frustrating. Usually if you have one gear out, you replace the gear and any other little thing in there that may have been damaged by a piece of flying metal and go about your business.

No, not sealed. Porsche does not supply internal parts for either the 5 speed or 6 speed Boxster/Carrera transmissions. Only limited parts are available for the GT3 transmission (mainly gear sets). Porsche claims that it is cheaper and better for the customer to get a rebuilt (exchange) transmission from their vendor.

Finally, I got my car back. The North America Porsche ran out of transmission replacement and I had to wait for one that Germany shipped. New transmission and new clutch costed $4,000.
