My neighbor's 1999 996 was serviced for a shattered driver side window. Airbag warning light was noticed after leaving dealer upon repair completion. I reviewed TSB. I am not sure if dealer removed seat to perform repair. Is the warning code readable via OBDII or must the car return to dealer for checking what triggered light?

Most OBD II scanners can not reset an airbag light.

Hard to say what triggered the light but it is most likely the seat belt contacts - if that TSB has not been performed.

it could be the seatbelts or the door airbag did not get connected correctly and is loose. Obd II readers will do check engine only, the factory scanner or the Baum Tools scanner is needed to reset airbag lights, ABS light etc

It is sometimes necessary to remove the side airbag to replace the door glass. I personally have been able to remove the window regulator without doing this but sometimes I have too loosen the four M6 bolts just enough to allow the airbag to give me some room. Warranty actually pays the tech to reset the airbag light for the tech would have to check window operation and adjust if necessary which pops the light on. Dealer should reset without any cost from you with the PST2 Tester.

I watched a mechanic I know replace the window regulator, and of course he had to first remove the door panel, glass, and then the regulator. The side air bag was not touched or disconnected, and the battery was not disconnected - but I did not know that untill he turned on the key to run the window up and down for a test before he put the panel back on. I expected an air bag light when he turned the ignition on to test the window function.

No light.

As REDLINE said, the air bag must have been disconnected during the glass replacement and the key turned on.

Tell your friend to take it in to have the light turned off.
