What is the screening or whatever on the oil pump that prevented these spring parts from getting sucked up into the engine?  On the air cooled I know Porsche eventually put a round screened filter on the pump intake.
Jeff, do I have that right?

i just can’t believe the engine is intact with all that debris in the engine.

Yes the oil pickup screen had a few pieces stuck to it.

I posted this reply on Rennlist as to my possible future plans:

Right now I believe I will go ahead and put it back together, fill with Mobil 1 10W/40 and the paper filter element, drive it for 500 miles or so then do another analysis and visual inspection of the sump and filter as well as send off for an oil analysis to both Blackstone and Oilvue. Of course if the engine eats it before then then I will consider a replacement. Someone; convince me otherwise.
