356s, 986s, and 911s

All,

i realize that this topic appears every now and then on forums, but i wanted to get some new feedback. what is the relationship like between old car (356) guys and new car (modern 911 models and boxsters) guys. since i bought mine i've felt like I'm in a "club" of sorts where all the people share the incredible porsche heritage. unfortunately, my attempts to wave and flash lights at most other boxster and 911 people end up with nothing in return. is this a dying tradition? does anyone care anymore? maybe it's silly to feel this "bond" with other owners, but i do. unfortunately it seems like a one-way relationship. maybe i'm too caught up in the romance and mystique of porsche. maybe i should just drive them and shut up. who knows?

as a side note, i feel like most people on here respect all porsche models so maybe there won't be any "negative" comments. however, if you are someone who hates 356s, and don't care to explain, please tell me where the animosity comes from. thanks.

I, for one, feel no ill-will toward 356 owners/drivers. In fact, quite the opposite. As is widely held, the 356 is the mother of the 911. If driving in Vermont and passing a Polar Silver 993, you will definitely receive a double flash (and I'll possibly flag you down for a closer look at your 356). Showing no sign of respect/appreciation for a 356 would be like running into your grandmother in church and not saying hello!

I have a 97 986 and a '68 911. I've been working on early 911 for 7 yr and only recently got the Boxster.

My take is folks driving the early 911s and 356 are driving them becuase they want to and love the cars. Many of the folks driving new 911s and Boxster probably view them as just another sports car that makes you look cool (or whatever). With that said, obviously there are drivers of the new Porsches as well that are just as dedicated to the marque, but harder to separate them from the posers. I usually look to see if they have PCA sticker in the window. Its a good indication they are serious about Porsches

I also have a mixed fleet consisting of a 930, 911 cab, and my '02 986. At a recent open air car show nearby, I was amused to note the division of some folks toward their own flavor of Porsche. I believe it is more likely what they are interested in, but there did seem to be a certain stratus between the various models. Having been a PCA member since '71, I have noticed the growing lack of headlight flashing over the years. I think it is mainly due to ignorance of the custom. In the sixties, we used to wave at ALL sports cars as you do on bikes now.
