Hello fellow enthusiasts,

 

I am attempting to perform an IMS upgrade on my boxster that has the 5 chain engine. Its a base model, engine is 2.5L. I have the tranny out. The engine is supported by a jack stand and mounted to the car.

 

First, I purchased the EPS eternal fix kit. Its currently in the freezer along with the insertion piece.

 

Secondly, I bought the kit pictured below in hopes it would help me in performing/completing the task.

So, ive got the pin inserted into the pulley at TDC.

I've installed the camshaft locking device closest to the flywheel area(rear? engine, drivers side)

This kit only comes with one camshaft locking device. I tried installing it on the front(where pulleys are, passenger side) but the space is small for such tool.

 

Will some one please tell me once and for all; is it necessary to lock both camshafts? And if NOT, then is it the front(pulley passenger side) or the rear(flywheel driver side) that needs to be locked via camshaft locking tool????

 

Third of all, can any of the other tools pictured aid in extracting the old IMSB?

I definitely feel silly asking this.

 

Lastly, please be kind. I am still learning!

You really did not need that tool kit, it is for resetting the cam timing or removing the cams themselves.  You should have a kit that looks like this:

As yours is a five-chain engine, you should be using the shorter of the two cam holding tools (just below the long bolt on the left above), and it gets inserted into the exhaust side cam on the passenger's side bank, towards the front of the car.

Not a problem.  I would also suggest you do an online search for LN Engineering's IMS retrofit instructions (PDF file), which are short, and truly clear on the steps and procedures to assure the retrofit goes smoothly the first time.  There are a lot of versions on how to do this, but LNs are decidedly the best out there: IMSR-Instruction-Warranty.pdf (lnengineering.com)

Looks like the cams have to be locked on the 5 chain too...that's what I thought.  Good lord, be careful what you read on the internet if it's not from a trusted source.  LN is def the way to go no one in their right mind would argue that.  Lots of horror stories from people that used the Pelican Parts procedure, and many others....

 

From the PDF that JPF posted:

"Use appropriate long cam lock tool for 3-chain or short cam lock tool for 5-chain engine to lock cams prior to removing chain tensioners."
